  1. Digital sampling is an electronic process
  2. used in telecommunications for transforming a
  3. constantly varying analog signal into one 
  4. composed of discrete units, a digital signal.
  5. In the creation of recorded music, sampling
  6. enables the composer, producer, or remix 
  7. engineer to borrow discrete vocal or 
  8. instrumental parts from other recorded work
  9. (it is also possible to sample live sound). 
  10. A telephone microphone changes sound waves
  11. into an analog signal that fluctuates up and
  12. down like a wave. In the digitizing process
  13. the waveform is sampled thousands of times a
  14. second and each part of the sampled wave is
  15. given a binary code number (made up of
  16. combinations of the digits 0 and 1) related
  17. to the height of the wave at that point,
  18. which is transmitted along the telephone
  19. line. Using digital signals, messages can be
  20. transmitted quickly, accurately, and
  21. economically.
